Neighbour Aid Volunteer thank you dinner
- 31 January 08
If you ask most people why they volunteer you will often get the reply they "want to give something back to the community”. Last night, management and staff of Rozelle Neigbourhood Centre “gave something back” to their volunteers with a thank you dinner at Balmain Leagues Club attended by 19 volunteers. In appreciation of the wonderful gift our volunteers give to their clients, certificates were presented to each volunteer by Barrie Styles - Program Manager, Carole Strong - Centre Manager and Faye Williams - Management Committee Chairperson.
In Neighbour Aid volunteers and clients are matched individually by Program Manager Barrie Styles according to their mutual interests and hobbies. MJ Yates a volunteer for the program for almost 2 years believes it is and important role she plays. “Clients will often think they are taking up too much time away from my family but I have learnt a lot about relationships and boundaries. I have had clients with Multiple Sclerosis, Motor Neurone and Parkinsons Disease. ”As a volunteer you learn what is important in life and to be thankful for the small things we can do to help someone.
Justine Lloyd another volunteer recently came to the local area and noticed there were a lot of eldery people walking around by themselves. She asked friends about what services were available to them, heard about Barrie Styles and joined the Rozelle Neighbour Aid last year. She works from home and has some spare time during the day. She now spends some time with a lovely 87 year old lady giving time, conversation, playing games and helping with some grocery shopping.
Volunteers believe there is a real social need to support isolated people in the community and say it is important to raise awareness of the Neighbour Aid Program.
