- 12 March 09
As part of the celebrations for International Women’s Day NSW Government Ministers, Local Members and members of the public nominated women from their community for outstanding achievements. On Thursday 5 November 86 women from around NSW gathered at Parliament House to celebrate International Womens Day hosted by Premier Nathan Rees. This year’s theme 'Women and Education' recognised that through increased access to education provides the best opportunity for women to expand their career choices, obtain economic security and achieve their potential. Verity Firth MP - Minister for Women, Education and Training and Local Member for Balmain nominated Community Development Worker, Lisa Smajlov. |

The nomination was in recognition of contribution to the community through projects and activities at Rozelle Neighbourhood Centre, Leichhardt Council and its committees and voluntary work with Rozelle Public School. The NSW Women of the Years Award for 2009 was deservedly won by Cheryl Koenig who is author and campaigner for carers and for improving rights of people suffering with Traumatic Brain Injury. Jane McGrath who lost her battle with cancer last year was posthumously honoured. Each women attending the event received a Make a Difference McGrath Foundation bracelet to continue raising the awareness of early detection and support services for breast cancer. I was privileged and humbled by the inspiring stories of the nominee honour roll who illustrate the big and small achievements one person can quietly achieve. I would like to acknowledge all the women I work with who continually inspire and support me in my community work. I am only just beginning my journey and look forward to working with the community to identify gaps and provide support where I can - it is a role I thoroughly enjoy. I would like to acknowledge all members of the community who support International Womens Day. |
